Can Ovarian Cysts be Cancerous?

2nd June 2009 by No Comments

Ovarian cysts are very common. They are fluid filled swellings on the surface of the ovary. Ovarian Cysts can appear both both before and after the menopause. But young women have larger chance to suffer from Ovarian Cysts. Cysts may appear on one ovary or both ovaries.

Most cysts are not cancerous (benign) and have a very low risk in cancer. Many studies have investigated the best way for the treatment of ovarian cysts. In the past, surgery for the cyst was the choice of treatment. But studies show that regular monitoring of the cyst, the ultrasound and blood tests, is better for most women.

If you have an ovarian cyst you should have regular blood tests to check for a protein called CA125. This protein in the blood of women with ovarian cancer will rise. But protein CA125 can rise in other conditions such as:

  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic or abdominal infection
  • Endometriosis - a condition where the lining of the womb (endometrium) grows outside the body of the womb
  • Inflammation of the liver (hepatitis)
  • Pregnancy

Some medical research institutes have established guidelines for doctors in the treatment of women with Ovarian Cysts. They recommend that doctors should monitor these women with the CA125 test and ultrasound scan. But this may vary depending on:

  • The size of the cysts
  • What they look like on a scan and
  • Whether they change over time

The guidelines say that the risk of developing cancer is very low, if you have small cysts on an ovary (less than 5 cm wide). Over half of these cysts disappear on its own within 3 months. The institutes advise a follow-up ultrasound scan 4 months after the cysts. Unfortunately, at this moment, there are no comparable guidelines for women with ovarian cysts that have not yet menopause.

The best idea is to drink more water than any other type of beverage in order to help your body help itself.

Alcohol

Alcohol is another beverage that needs to be limited when suffering from the symptoms of an ovarian cyst. Avoiding Alcohol is the best diet for ovarian cysts sufferer. Next to caffeine, alcoholic is the most abused legal drug of choice for people wishing to alter their energy level and their mood. Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant. Though it relaxes the drinker and has a mild tranquilizing effect, it also slows down physical processes. In addition, mental alertness and acuity are decreased when drinking alcohol. Alcohol, and the sugar in it, is difficult for the body to process. Anything that is normally hard for your body to handle will make life extra miserable when you have an ovarian cyst.

Salt

Many foods like cheese and meat generally contain large amounts of sodium. An overabundance of sodium in relationship to the body’s potassium levels can lead to edema, bloating, and even some cases of high blood pressure.

Treatment Overview of Functional Ovarian Cysts

4th April 2009 by No Comments
Most functional ovarian cysts are harmless,  they do not cause symptoms and go away without treatment. When the treatment is necessary, treatment goals are: Relief of symptoms of pain or Beck cavern printing. Prevent ovulation (the repetition, if there is a problem). Treatment with pills of birth control prevents ovulation.

Initial treatment
Because functional ovarian cysts are usually without treatment within 1 to 2 menstrual cycles, your doctor may recommend a period of observation without treatment (watchful waiting) to see whether your ovarian cyst or who is better on its own. Your doctor is a pelvic exam to more than 1 to 2 months to see if the cyst is large. If an ovarian cyst does not improve in 1 to 2 menstrual cycles, your doctor, you can do more testing to make sure your symptoms are not another type of growth of the ovary. Home treatment with heat and pain medications can often alleviate the unpleasant symptoms during this time.

Ongoing treatment
A functional ovarian cyst, only 2 to 3 menstrual cycles, has an unusual ultrasound, or causes of problems can be treated with medicines or operations. Your doctor may suggest that you try to pills of birth control for several months to stop more cysts. Surgical cyst distance (Cystectomy) through a small incision (laparoscopy) may be necessary if a functional ovarian cyst painful close, despite medical treatment. If a cyst has an unusual ultrasound, or if you have other risk factors for ovarian cancer, your doctor may surgically over a distance greater cutting abdomen (laparotomy) instead of laparoscopy.

Ovarian Cysts in Early Pregnancy

29th March 2009 by No Comments
During early pregnancy, women have almost always normal scan of the ovaries in the 1st Quarter. However, if an ovarian cyst, this is usually a normal completion of an early pregnancy.

An ovarian cyst is an enlargement of the ovaries, which appear with liquid-filled containers. The vast majority of ovarian cysts diagnosed at the beginning of pregnancy a cyst known physiological corpus luteum (cystic or ulcerative colitis). This is normally found at the beginning of pregnancy. The corpus luteum supports the wall of the uterus and in turn the pregnancy itself, the body is yellow, so that by the production of the pregnancy hormone, progesterone, which helps to feed the pregnancy. Once the pregnancy after 1 Trimester of pregnancy the corpus luteum is no longer necessary and therefore triggers the spontaneous, but not too bad, that it is the mother or baby.

Most ovarian cysts diagnosed at the beginning of pregnancy caused no symptoms. They are usually an accessory and find women are unaware of their presence. However, if a violation of ovarian cyst, torsion or bleeding in the middle of the cyst, then decrease the abdominal pain on the side of the ovarian cyst occurs. Most ovarian cysts are diagnosed early in pregnancy is not the cancer of the ovaries, the risk for cancer of the ovaries during pregnancy is extremely rare (1 in 15,000 to 1 in 32,000 pregnancies).

When an ovarian cyst is located in the first quarter, and we are not worried about the type of ovarian cyst, a scanner is organized by 6 weeks after childbirth, it is supplied.

Q & A of Ovarian Cysts During Pregnancy

26th March 2009 by No Comments
Question:
I am 35 and 13 weeks into my second pregnancy. Four weeks, I went to the hospital for pain in my lower right quadrant. An ultrasound examination showed a cyst on my right ovary, about 15cm. The doctor told me in bed since then, and I have had two sonograms. Does not happen. Doctors seem to think that it is filled with fluid and not cancer. Cysts can really get off on their own? How long should I wait to see if we can? Have you heard any of these large cysts during pregnancy and those who are a risk to the baby?

Alberta

Answer:
Cysts (fluid-filled structures) can be found on their own, but it is unlikely, a 15cm cyst in pregnancy will do so. The cysts are not uncommon during pregnancy, about 1 in 1,000 pregnant women. The vast majority of ovarian masses during pregnancy are benign, the incidence of ovarian cancer is 1 in 25,000 births. Sonography can be useful in determining whether a mass is benign or malignant, but can not do it with 100 percent certainty. If the ultrasound shows that the mass is strictly liquid without septation or thick walls, it is probably benign.

The problem with the large, but benign cysts during pregnancy is that they break or torso (rotation about themselves). Each of these events leads to considerable pain for the mother and the potential for miscarriage or premature Labor and delivery for the baby. Large (more than 6-8cm) cysts are usually removed surgically, if not decreasing in size spontaneously during a few weeks. In pregnancy, the best time for operation in the second quarter, ideally around 14-16 weeks. Occasionally, a cyst can be treated by laparoscopy, but very large cysts often require a large open cut.

A cyst of 15 cm is quite large, and the possibility of complications such as rupture is high. For storage of more than two weeks, I suggest you talk to your doctor about your choice. Your doctor may have been, only to see that now, until the first quarter (the first 13 weeks of pregnancy). I deleted several posts of this size during pregnancy, and all of my patients came to healthy babies.
